THE CAPTAIN

Captain Tom is a native Floridian being born and raised in Fort Lauderdale.  Tom has been passionate about the water and boating since he was a child, growing up near the coast and spending his summers on the water. It all started when his parents bought him his first jon-boat at age 12.  He used that boat on Lake Grassy in Central Florida for quite a few years.  Then he purchased his first boat in 1997 and made his first trip to the Stuart Sandbar.  He fell in love with the area and that started his frequent trips to the sandbar.  He and his wife basically raised their four daughters at that sandbar, even taking the youngest there when she was just four months old! 

Tom is a retired dentist who practiced for over 33 years.  Once he decided to wrap up his practice; he thought that he’d like to take people to his favorite place.  So he decided to follow what Mark Twain is reported to have said, “If you find a job you love, you will never have to work a day in your life!”  So he spoke to his wife and they decided to start: Smilin’ Sandbar Boat Tours.  Tom then obtained his US Coast Guard Masters License and put the plan into action.

With over 45 years of hands-on experience navigating open water, Tom has become an expert in boating, boat handling, and ensuring a safe, enjoyable experience for all who join him on his charters. His love for the ocean runs deep, and he is dedicated to sharing the joy and serenity of being out on the water with others.

Over the years, Tom has honed his skills in all aspects of boating, from navigating to discovering the best sandbars and hidden gems along the coast. Along with his wife, Lorraine, their easygoing nature and deep knowledge of local waters make them the perfect crew for anyone looking to escape and enjoy a relaxing day on the water without the stress of renting or managing a boat themselves. Whether it’s an adventurous day on the sandbars or a peaceful cruise at sunset, their goal is always the same: to create unforgettable memories for their guests while fostering a deep respect for the ocean and its beauty.
